Your partner got down on his knee to pop the question and you said yes!
Congratulations on embarking on a new chapter in your life! Getting engaged to the love of your life is a heady feeling, it is one moment that you’ll cherish and remember your whole life.
The best way to preserve that love-filled, exhilarating feeling is to capture it on camera. An engagement shoot is the perfect way to capture some of the most memorable moments of your life. Years down the road, when you’re well-settled and happily married, looking back to your engagement photo shoot will spark wonderful memories in your heart.
But getting your pictures taken is not everyone’s cup of tea; the photographer will do everything to ensure you have a fun and carefree session but couples should also make sure they’re at their best on their engagement photo shoot.
Here are a few things you can do to prep and prepare.
Pick a Good Location
The backdrop that you choose for your engagement photo shoot should reflect and resonate with you as a couple. It should be some place meaningful to your relationship and which you and your fiancé have a deep connection with. It should be somewhere you and your partner can freely express their love and affection, because that is what the photographer will aim to capture on camera.
For example, you can pick the place you had your first date at, or your first kiss. It can be a local coffee shop you frequent daily or a park.
Wardrobe and Props
Wear outfits that are complimentary to each other and try to wear something that won’t steal the attention from you two. The goal of an engagement photo shoot is to showcase the feelings of love and affection on camera; if you go for a bright, chunky look, it might end up being distracting. Try to wear something soft and flowy; guys can opt for a more formal look than usual, e.g. a classy jacket and tailored jeans.
It is a good idea to take along fun props too, such as a bottle of champagne or fun placards, so that you can add a different look to your photos.
Timings
Go for a time of the day where there is no rush hour crowd around and no harsh sunlight to avoid having all your efforts go down the drain. Schedule your session for the early morning or evening. The golden hour is the best time to get pictures taken; this will be around 1-1.5 hours after sunrise and before sunset.
Get to Know Your Photographer
Go for a photographer who makes you feel comfortable and at ease. You want your photographer to understand your personality and what you are like as a couple. Have a good talk with them before having the engagement shoot. That way you’ll develop a rapport with them and be able to express your love freely on camera.
