“Hold on, let me get grandma’s third cousin’s daughter into this shot!”
You hear a bridesmaid yell out to the photographer as she runs off. You turn to look at the photographer who’s standing there with an expression on their face that clearly suggests they’re rethinking their life’s choices.
If you’ve ever been a part of a photoshoot, you’ll know exactly what the photographer is experiencing. Group shots can be challenging as well. You know there’s always that one person who never does what’s asked of them!
Yet, when you look at some group photos years later, you can’t help but wonder how the photographer was able to establish such flawless shots. Here, I’ll share some of my tactics as a professional wedding photographer in Dallas.
How Photographers are able to Get Great Group Shots
Limiting the Number of Shots
Most professional photographers try their best to limit the number of shots to 6 or less. No guest will be patient enough to be photographed for hours on end. For this reason, it is crucial that you limit your list of group shots to a minimum. Sit with your better half and work out who you want in those shots. If their picture won’t go in the album, frame or on the wall, don’t have it taken.
Help Your Wedding Photographer
Your photographer will not know every member of your wedding party. Delegate the job of finding guests for the pictures to a bridesmaid or an usher.
Group wedding shots need to be taken efficiently and painlessly. But that would depend on whether your group is ready and waiting to be photographed.
Have the usher or bridesmaid know the shot list in advance so they can be quick in bringing people together. You don’t want to keep your photographer and other guests waiting because your grandma decided to call it a day.
Know Who to Add from Your Guest List
Is your aunt finicky about getting her photo taken? Don’t add her to the shot list then.
Not everyone will want to have their picture taken. When making your shot list, add only those names that will be comfortable in such a setting.
Stay Relaxed
You’re not getting your passport photo taken. You don’t need to have all your guests stand in one line. When standing for a group shot, talk to people and allow them to feel relaxed. Keep their glasses filled up and allow your photographer to be creative so that you can have some fun alongside.
