What to Leave Out of Your Wedding Photography Checklist

You’ve done your research on the most creative wedding poses, and you’ve talked out the details with your photographer. Now all that’s left to do is your wedding photography checklist and you’re good to go.

Easy-peasy, right? We’d like to say yes, but there’s a problem we need to address. Even with your basic shot list, there are still so many wedding poses and props that are quite out of fashion. You just don’t know it yet.

Sure, you’ve researched. But did you check the dates on those magazine articles?

No worries though. To make this task easier, Lily Hayes Photography offers a basic wedding photography checklist that you should follow!

Poses You Shouldn’t Have in Your Wedding Shot List

1. The Rings in Focus

Yes, it’s a classic pose. But now it’s just cliché and unoriginal. Rather than that, add a shot of the rings, balanced against some flower petals or other accessories.

2. Pop of Color against Black and White

This one’s as old as time! The photo is shot in black-and-white and a single element, the bouquet, shoes or a boutonniere is colored in. Instead of getting a bit of both, opt for simple, classic black-and-white photography. It’s more artistic and visually pleasing.

3. Basic Wedding Gown Shot

The wedding gown is either hung in a closet or against the window, and the picture is shot like a passport photo, smack-dab from the front with no added flairs. And in a professional photographer’s opinion, this is nothing short of tragic. A wedding gown is one of the most gorgeous dresses you could have. Have your photographer add some angles, lighting to the shot to give it the spotlight it deserves!

4. Holding a Frame

This pose is just cheesy, not to mention outdated! With wedding photos, you don’t need an actual frame to frame the shot correctly. Unless you particularly like this type of photo, we recommend that you remove it from your shot list.

5. Bride and Groom Jumping

Unless you have a history of taking such jumping photos, we suggest that you skip this shot as well. Aside from being a bit awkward, the timing of the jump can be an issue as well.

6. Bride/Groom Looking Off into the Distance, Serious Expression

It’s the happiest day of their life. Why would anyone want such a photo in their wedding album? With solo shots, its best to focus on the happy aspect of the occasion, rather than trying to add some drama by having the couple pose in unnecessary serious poses.
