As a professional Dallas wedding photographer, I’ve had the pleasure of capturing some of the happiest moments of my clients’ special day.
From the time the bride starts getting ready to the grand exit when the couple runs to their car amidst a shower of seeds (or bubbles), I take care to photograph all those memories that couples would want to reminisce about in the years to come.
And in every wedding, nothing makes me more teary-eyed than the moment when the father leads his beloved daughter on the dance floor for that memorable father-daughter dance.
A Bit of History
I’ve read a quite a bit about the history of the father-daughter dance. Typically, this dance was a demand from the father, since he would give his little daughter away to someone. Since during olden times, this was done with a dowry, the father’s demand would be met, and he’d have one last dance with his daughter before she was given away.
Thankfully, that tradition has died down.
But the sentiment of love for one’s offspring still hasn’t changed. The only thing that has changed though is that the newly married couple now shares their first dance. It is then followed by the mother-son dance and the father-daughter dance.
It’s the Love that Matters
It’s wonderful to photograph this special moment, not only because of the sentiment behind it, but because of the emotion that every father goes through.
The truth is, no matter how much every father accepts that their little girl has grown up, this moment – when he’s holding her in his arms and looking at her dressed up as a bride – that’s the moment he finally agrees that she is indeed not little anymore.
She’s leading her own life with a man who’s good for her. He’s not her guardian anymore, symbolic or otherwise.
And for any dad who loves his daughter, this is a significant moment. He isn’t sad but overwhelmed. And when he’s dancing with his little one, every moment from when she was a little girl and danced on his toes to the second now when she’s dancing as his little girl; that is the emotion that overwhelms him.
And being a professional wedding photographer; that is the emotion I capture.
