As a bride, you may feel a little miffed that it’s not bright and sunny on your wedding day. But for a wedding photographer, this type of weather is a challenge which they thrive upon.
Rainy days, thunderstorms and dust storms aren’t as intimidating for a wedding photographer, especially if they’ve had years of practice. By using the right tricks, the right props and just a bit of creativity, professional wedding photographers use everything in their arsenal to use the weather to their advantage, and capture some truly breathtaking images.
What Photographers Do to Document Weather-Worn Weddings
- Plan a Short Session in the Rain
You have to be willing to get a little wet. But if you’re okay with it, your photographer can use your willingness to get some amazing photographs. Keep the elements of the rainy season in mind – the drops of water, the low lighting, the overall cozy atmosphere. All you have to do is relax and smile. Finding the right angle and spot is the photographer’s job.
- Take Advantage of the Clouds
This is especially useful if you have a vantage point from your location. Storms (of any kind) do look beautiful, since they present a wide array of clouds and textures, and that is exactly what a photographer needs. Don’t let the gloom of a rainy or thunderous day stop you from turning the opportunity into a wonderful lasting memory.
- Use Back-Light to Highlight the Elements
Even if you’re indoors, your photographer can still use the weather elements to create a wonderful scene. This is usually done when it’s raining or snowing. By using a backlight, the photographer makes the couple stand directly in the line of light, thus using the brightness to highlight and focus on the elements as they pass through.
- Use it to Bring out the Colors
Weather elements have a way of bringing out color in different aspects of nature. The blues look bluer, the greens look greener and the venue gets a sort of glossy (when raining) or slightly other-worldly look. And for a photographer, that’s great news, especially if they can bring out the bride-in-white to stand in contrast against her surroundings.
- Using a Shutter in Thunderstorms
This is another method we photographers use. If the flash isn’t enough for capturing those falling raindrops (or snowflakes), we choose a shutter speed that’s fast enough to do so. Usually that’s 1/500th of a second, so it’s enough to freeze those falling drops around an elegantly posed bride.
